About Luteinising hormone

What is luteinising hormone?

Luteinising hormone (LH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. It is important for the reproductive system in both males and females. In adult females, LH is primarily responsible for stimulating the release of a follicle during ovulation. Increased LH in the blood can be used to predict ovulation in the next few days in fertile females.

In postmenopausal women, the level of LH in the blood is consistently elevated as the ovaries stop responding to its presence. In men, LH is important for stimulating testosterone production. Changes in the level of LH are associated with infertility or pituitary gland tumours.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of LH in the blood. It can be used to help investigate the cause of infertility in both males and females or to assess pituitary gland function.
