About Cortisol blood test

What is cortisol?

Cortisol is a glucocorticoid, a type of steroid hormone, produced by the adrenal glands. It is involved in the stress response, metabolism and immune function. As a result of cortisol’s role in the fight-or-flight (stress) response, it is often referred to as the stress hormone.

Hormones are chemical messengers used by the body to respond to internal and external influences. The activity of hormones must be finely regulated to produce the desired physiological effect. This regulation is typically coordinated by complex interactions between several different hormones. Both excessive production and a deficiency in the production of steroid hormones can cause ill health. Excess levels of glucocorticoids may cause immunosuppression, whereas low levels may cause the release of inflammatory molecules.

Disorders related to glucocorticoids include Addison’s and Cushing’s disease. Cushing’s disease is a result of too much cortisol, whereas Addison’s disease, also known as adrenal insufficiency, occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough cortisol.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of cortisol in the blood and can be used to help diagnose Addison’s and Cushing’s disease.
