About Cortisol saliva tests (4)

What is cortisol?

Cortisol is a glucocorticoid, a type of steroid hormone, produced by the adrenal glands. It is involved in the stress response, metabolism and immune function. As a result of cortisol’s role in the fight-or-flight (stress) response, it is often referred to as the stress hormone.

Hormones are chemical messengers used by the body to respond to internal and external influences. The activity of hormones must be finely regulated to produce the desired physiological effect. This regulation is typically coordinated by complex interactions between several different hormones.

Cortisol levels are released in greater amounts in the morning and reduce during the day. This pattern is called a diurnal release and is important for the body’s circadian rhythm. This rhythm can be changed or disrupted by sleeping during the day or stress and illness.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of cortisol in the saliva upon waking, at 12.00, 16.00 and at bedtime. It can be used to check the diurnal pattern of cortisol release and to diagnose conditions affecting the adrenal glands.
