About Trt monitoring with free testosterone

What is TRT monitoring?

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is a medical treatment for conditions which result in low testosterone levels. Testosterone is a steroid hormone that plays a key role in the development of the male reproductive system, muscle mass and body hair. Testosterone levels decline with age in males, a process known as andropause, resulting in physiological changes including reduced muscle strength and bone density. Not all of the testosterone in the body is available for tissues to utilise.

Testosterone binds with sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) or albumin, regulating the amount the body can use at any given time. Testosterone that is not bound to SHBG or albumin and is available for the body to use is known as bioavailable or free testosterone. Symptoms of low testosterone include reduced bone and muscle mass and low sex drive. Monitoring of TRT is important, as negative side-effects of the treatment include skin conditions, low sperm count, increased risk of blood clots, heart attack and stroke.

Why take the test?

This test includes the hormones covered by the standard TRT monitoring test. In addition, it provides a calculated level of bioavailable or free testosterone by measuring levels of sex hormone-binding globulin and albumin. It is useful to monitor hormone balance to adjust and optimise the dosage of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT).
