About Hormone mini check male
What is the hormone mini check?
This test offers insight into the levels of testosterone and oestradiol. Testosterone is a steroid hormone that plays a key role in the development of the male reproductive system, muscle mass and body hair. Testosterone levels decline with age in males, a process known as andropause, resulting in physiological changes including reduced muscle strength and bone density. Not all of the testosterone in the body is available for tissues to utilise.
Testosterone binds with sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) or albumin, regulating the amount the body can use at any given time. Testosterone that is not bound to SHBG or albumin and is available for the body to use is known as bioavailable testosterone. Oestradiol is important for female reproductive development and is critical for the menstrual cycle. In males, oestradiol is important for sperm production. Oestradiol is also produced in small amounts in fat tissue, the brain and blood vessels. Symptoms of low testosterone include reduced bone and muscle mass and low sex drive.
Elevated testosterone in females can result in the development of male physiological characteristics such as deeper voices, increased muscle mass and excessive hair growth. It is also associated with abnormal menstrual cycles and infertility. Elevated oestradiol in males can result in increased body fat, reduced muscle, sexual dysfunction and the development of female physiological characteristics such as breast tissue. In females it can result in weight gain, depression, infertility and increased risk of stroke or heart attack. Oestradiol deficiency is associated with bone conditions such as osteoporosis.
Why take the test?
This test provides information on your testosterone and oestradiol levels both free and bound. It is useful for males and females if you think you are experiencing any of the symptoms described above and would like to know about your hormone levels.
