About Tryptase
What is tryptase?
Tryptase is an enzyme produced by mast cells as part of an immune response.
Tryptase is typically present in low concentrations in the blood but spikes in response to a pathogen, peaking after 1-2 hours and then returning to normal levels over the course of several more. Mast cells also play a key role in allergic reactions and can produce anaphylaxis in extreme cases.
Elevated blood tryptase levels can indicate problems with the immune system including mastocytosis, mast cell activation syndrome or anaphylaxis.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of tryptase in the blood. It is used to diagnose anaphylaxis and mast cell diseases.
