About Testosterone & cortisol
What are testosterone and cortisol?
Testosterone is a steroid hormone that plays a key role in the development of the male reproductive system, muscle mass and body hair. Testosterone levels decline with age in males, a process known as andropause, resulting in physiological changes including reduced muscle strength and bone density. Testosterone also has important functions in women contributing to bone health, fertility, menstrual cycle and sex drive.
Cortisol is a glucocorticoid, a type of steroid hormone, produced by the adrenal glands. It is involved in the stress response, metabolism and immune function. As a result of cortisol’s role in the fight-or-flight (stress) response, it is often referred to as the stress hormone. Hormones are chemical messengers used by the body to respond to internal and external influences. The activity of hormones must be finely regulated to produce the desired physiological effect. This regulation is typically coordinated by complex interactions between several different hormones.
Both excessive production and a deficiency in the production of steroid hormones can cause ill health. Disorders related to abnormal testosterone and cortisol include Addison’s and Cushing’s disease. Cushing’s disease is a result of too much cortisol, whereas Addison’s disease, also known as adrenal insufficiency, occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough cortisol. Testosterone may also be elevated in Cushing’s disease and low in Addison’s disease.
