About Pregnenolone

What is pregnenolone?

Pregnenolone is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland from cholesterol. Pregnenolone is a precursor to other hormones including testosterone, oestrogen and cortisol. It also has an important role in brain function and is used as a medicine for schizophrenia.

Maintaining the correct hormone balance involves a complex interconnected network of hormone levels and is essential for keeping the body healthy.

Both excessive production and a deficiency in the production of steroid hormones may indicate an underlying illness. Disorders related to changes in pregnenolone levels include congenital adrenal hyperplasia, a rare disorder characterised by low levels of cortisol and high levels of male hormones.

Why take this test?

This test measures the level of pregnenolone in the blood and can be used to investigate congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
