About Parathyroid hormone

What is parathyroid hormone?

Parathyroid hormone is a hormone produced by the parathyroid glands in your neck. It regulates the level of calcium and phosphorus in the body; calcium levels can be increased by breaking down bone, absorbing more calcium from food or preventing the loss of calcium in the urine.

Parathyroid hormone levels must be regulated to maintain good health and both too little and too much can cause problems.

Elevated levels of parathyroid hormone are associated with primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism and low levels are associated with hypoparathyroidism.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of parathyroid hormone in the blood and can be used to investigate the cause of abnormal calcium levels and conditions such as primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism.
