What are ovarian autoantibodies?

Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In some cases, the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells called autoantibodies. Ovarian autoantibodies affect the ovaries and specifically target an enzyme called 17-alpha-hydroxylase (17-alpha-OH).

This enzyme is important for the production of sex hormones and glucocorticoids. Ovarian autoantibodies may be present in ovarian failure with Addison’s disease, autoimmune polyendocrinopathies, hypoadrenalism, insulin-dependent diabetes and pernicious anaemia.

Take your test and post

Follow our simple instructions to take your sample and post back the enclosed prepaid envelope to our accredited lab for processing. We also offer home or workplace visits by a qualified nurse. For COVID-19 Fit to Fly tests you must attend one of our partner clinics for our trained collection officers to take your sample. You will then have the results emailed to you.
