What is macroprolactin?

Prolactin is a hormone responsible for stimulating the production of breast milk in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Macroprolactin is an inert form of prolactin which is bound to antibody IgG. Elevated prolactin in individuals (male or female) who are not pregnant, or breastfeeding can cause a variety of symptoms including breast milk production, low testosterone and infertility.

If experiencing these symptoms, a prolactin test will be performed alongside this macroprolactin test. This is because macroprolactin will show up as prolactin in a prolactin test but has no biological activity, potentially resulting in a false elevated prolactin level.

Why take the test? This test measures the level of macroprolactin in the blood. It is used in conjunction with a prolactin test to measure prolactin levels.

For COVID-19 Fit to Fly tests you must attend one of our partner clinics for our trained collection officers to take your sample. You will then have the results emailed to you.
