About Low t (testosterone) blood test

What is low testosterone?

Low testosterone (T) is a condition characterised by low levels of the hormone testosterone. Testosterone is a steroid hormone that plays a key role in the development of the male reproductive system, muscle mass and body hair. Testosterone levels decline with age in males, a process known as andropause, resulting in physiological changes including reduced muscle strength and bone density.

However, low T may occur in younger males as a result of an underlying condition such as those affecting the testicles (primary hypogonadism) or the pituitary gland or hypothalamus (secondary hypogonadism), liver or kidneys. Symptoms of low testosterone include reduced bone and muscle mass, low sex drive, difficulty sleeping and depression.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of testosterone in the blood and can be used to detect low T.
