What is insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 3?

Insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 3 (IGF-BP3) acts as a transport protein to carry insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF-2) in the blood. This binding to IGFs increases their stability and allows IGF-B3 to regulate IGF activity. IGF-1 is a protein produced by the liver in response to growth hormone, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. It is responsible for mediating many of the effects of growth hormone in regulating cell proliferation and growth.

In childhood, high levels of IGF-1 are necessary to sustain growth and development. In adults, the level of IGF-1 is typically significantly reduced comparatively. IGF-BP3 also follows this pattern, reducing in adulthood. IGF-1 deficiency in childhood is associated with growth problems such as dwarfism. Elevated levels in adults are associated with certain types of cancer and ageing.
