About Hirsutism profile

What is hirsutism? Hirsutism is a disorder in women characterised by excessive hair growth. Dark, thick hair typically grows in a male-pattern on the face, back, chest, tummy, buttocks or thighs. Hirsutism is caused by an excess of male sex hormones (androgens) such as testosterone. A hormonal imbalance may be a result of an underlying condition such as polycystic ovary syndrome (POCS), Cushing’s syndrome or congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Why take the test?

This test measures the levels of androgens, as well as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) (important for ovary function and androgen synthesis), and Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) (binds to androgens and oestrogen) to help diagnose hirsutism.
