What is dihydrotestosterone?

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a male sex hormone (an androgen) produced from the breakdown of testosterone by the enzyme 5α-reductase. DHT plays a fundamental role in male embryonic development and maturation of male genitalia during puberty.

Hormones are chemical messengers used by the body to respond to internal and external influences. The activity of hormones must be finely regulated to produce the desired physiological effect. This regulation is typically coordinated by complex interactions between several different hormones. Both excessive production and a deficiency in the production of steroid hormones can cause ill health. Disorders related to DHT include testicular problems, delayed puberty, and 5α-reductase deficiency (development of abnormal or female genitalia in biological males).
