What is dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate?

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) sulphate (DHEA-S) is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It is made from cholesterol and is a precursor to female sex hormones, such as oestrogen and male sex hormones, such as testosterone. DHEA-S is the sulphated version of DHEA which is present in greater amounts than DHEA.

DHEA-S levels decrease with age, along with oestrogen and testosterone. DHEA supplements are sometimes taken to try and counteract the changes associated with decreases in these hormones but the majority of research remains inconclusive.

DHEA-S levels may change as a result of abnormal adrenal function. Higher DHEA-S levels are associated with the development of masculine features in women (virilisation), hirsutism, a disorder characterised by excessive hair growth and early onset of puberty in boys.

Take your test and post

For COVID-19 Fit to Fly tests you must attend one of our partner clinics for our trained collection officers to take your sample. You will then have the results emailed to you.
