What is aldosterone?

Aldosterone is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland. It is an important mineralocorticoid which affects blood pressure and regulates the level of sodium and potassium in the blood.

Hormones are chemical messengers used by the body to respond to internal and external influences. The activity of hormones must be finely regulated to produce the desired physiological effect. This regulation is typically coordinated by complex interactions between several different hormones. Both excessive production and a deficiency in the production of steroid hormones can cause ill health. 

Excess levels of mineralocorticoids may cause sodium retention, swelling, and high blood pressure, whereas low levels may result in low blood pressure and high potassium. Disorders related to abnormal levels of mineralocorticoids include hyperaldosteronism and hypoaldosteronism.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of aldosterone in the urine. It is typically used to determine the cause of abnormal blood pressure and potassium levels. In combination with testing for associated enzyme rennin, it can be used to diagnose adrenal gland tumours.
