About Prolactin

Change me!!!Prolactin (PRL), or lactotrope as it is sometimes known, is a protein. It is produced by a small organ at the base of the brain called the anterior pituitary gland. Although found in very low levels in men, prolactin is best known for producing breast milk in females. During pregnancy, and for the duration of breastfeeding, prolactin levels will remain high. Another cause of increased prolactin levels is a prolactinoma, a usually benign tumour of the pituitary gland that makes the prolactin. If this becomes enlarged, then headaches and visual impairment can occur. In extreme cases, prolactinoma can also result in infertility and irregular periods, while it men in can cause loss of sex drive. This test measures levels of prolactin - and determines if the pituitary gland is working well.
