About Progesterone

What is progesterone?

Progesterone is a female sex hormone produced by the ovaries. It is typically produced after ovulation and serves to thicken the uterus lining in preparation for the growth of a fertilised egg. It is vital for the menstrual cycle and for early pregnancy.

Maintaining the correct hormone balance involves a complex interconnected network of hormone levels and is essential for keeping the body healthy. Both excessive production and a deficiency in the production of steroid hormones may indicate an underlying illness.

Elevated progesterone is associated with congenital adrenal hyperplasia, whereas low levels are associated with irregular periods, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and may result in miscarriage or early labour.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of progesterone in the blood and can be used to investigate infertility or failed pregnancy.
