About Oestriol

What is oestriol?

Oestriol is one of the three main naturally produced oestrogen hormones, along with oestradiol and oestrone. It is typically present in very low concentrations for most of a woman’s life, increasing drastically in the placenta during pregnancy. Free oestriol levels can be used as an indicator of foetal health, with lower than normal blood levels during pregnancy potentially indicating a chromosome disorder such as Down’s Syndrome.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of oestriol in the blood. It is typically used to monitor foetal health in pregnant women.
