What are oestradiol, progesterone and prolactin?

There are a wide range of factors affecting female fertility, ranging from age to hormonal abnormalities. This test checks prolactin, progesterone and oestradiol levels to give a picture of hormone balance in females. Abnormal levels of these hormones are associated with reduced fertility. Progesterone is a hormone produced by the ovaries.It is typically produced after ovulation and serves to thicken the uterus lining in preparation for the growth of a fertilised egg.

Oestradiol is the strongest and most common of three naturally produced oestrogen hormones. It is important for female reproductive development and is critical for the menstrual cycle. Prolactin is a hormone responsible for stimulating the production of breast milk in pregnant or breastfeeding women.  

Why take the test?

This test measures prolactin, progesterone and oestradiol levels. It is used to help explain the difficulty in conceiving and monitor the menopause. It can also be used to check correct male and female hormone balance in either males or females.
