What is anti-Müllerian hormone?

Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) plays a key role in foetal development, inhibiting formation of the female Müllerian ducts during formation of reproductive organs in males. AMH also has a role in women of reproductive age where it is produced by ovarian follicles, fluid-filled sacs containing immature eggs. The level of AMH in the blood has been shown to correlate with the number of follicles (i.e. eggs) in the ovarian reserve. AMH levels are used as an indicator and cannot predict the exact number of follicles an individual has left.

Low AMH can be associated with age or low fertility, high AMH can be associated with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Why take the test?

This test assesses the level of AMH in the blood. It can be used as an indicator of ovarian reserve or to indicate potential responsiveness to IVF.
