About Endomysial iga antibodies
What are IgG endomysial antibodies?
Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In some cases, the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which damage the body’s own cells. Disorders caused by this process are called autoimmune diseases.
IgG endomysial antibodies are produced against gluten by people diagnosed with coeliac disease. Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition triggered by exposure to gluten, affecting approximately 1% of the population. In this disease, exposure to gluten triggers the immune system to produce autoantibodies which can target a number of different organs in the body.
Symptoms of coeliac disease include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloating, indigestion, skin rashes, and fatigue after eating gluten.
Why take the test?
This test looks for the presence of IgG endoymsial antibodies in the blood. It is typically used as an alternative to the IgA endomysial antibody test for IgA-deficient individuals suspected of having coeliac disease.
