About Urine microscopy and culture (uti)
What is urine microscopy and culture?
The kidneys filter the blood to retain cells and substances required by the body and to excrete waste products in the urine. Sometimes excess cells and substances are lost in the urine; this is indicative of a disease or infection. For instance, bacteria and white blood cells may be present in the urine as a result of infection. This test uses microscopy to analyse the waste products excreted in the urine and culture to look for bacteria which may be causing an infection.
Why take this test?
This test uses microscopy and culture to look for abnormal levels of cells, crystals, casts and pathogens in the urine.
