About Albumin

What is albumin?

Albumin is the primary protein component of blood plasma. Made by the liver, it is responsible for keeping fluid in your bloodstream and transporting substances such as medicines, enzymes, hormones and vitamins around the body. Albumin levels can be used to diagnose liver or kidney problems.

Disorders associated with abnormal albumin levels include liver disease, kidney disease, malnutrition, malabsorption and dehydration.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of albumin in the blood. It is typically used to diagnose malnutrition, dehydration, liver disease and kidney disease.
