What is a steroid cell antibody?

Anti-steroid cell antibodies are autoantibodies which target steroid-producing cells in the adrenal glands. Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In rare cases the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. Disorders caused by this process are called autoimmune diseases and can be potentially life-threatening.

Anti-steroid cell antibodies attack the adrenal glands, which are essential for producing and maintaining balance of hormones cortisol and aldosterone. Damage to the adrenal glands can result in a variety of symptoms associated with hormone imbalance.

Anti-steroid antibodies are commonly associated with Addison’s disease.
