What is 3α-androstanediol glucuronide?
3α-Androstanediol glucuronide is a “male” sex hormone (an androgen) produced from the breakdown of testosterone. Testosterone is first metabolised to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is further metabolised to 3α-androstanediol glucuronide.
Hormones are chemical messengers used by the body to respond to internal and external influences. The activity of hormones must be finely regulated to produce the desired physiological effect. This regulation is typically coordinated by complex interactions between several different hormones. Both excessive production and a deficiency in the production of steroid hormones can cause ill health.
Disorders related to 3α-androstanediol glucuronide include acne and hirsutism, a disorder characterised by excessive hair growth.
