About Salivary duct antibodies

What are salivary duct antibodies?

Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In rare cases the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells.

Disorders caused by this process are called autoimmune diseases and can be potentially life-threatening. Anti-salivary duct antibodies are autoantibodies which target the salivary glands which produce tears and saliva.

The presence of these antibodies is associated with Sjögren’s syndrome.

Why take the test?

This test screens for the presence of anti-salivary duct antibodies in the blood. It is typically used in conjunction with other tests to diagnose the autoimmune disease Sjögren’s syndrome.
