About Rheumatoid factor
What is rheumatoid factor?
Rheumatoid factor typically refers to an autoantibody produced by the immune system, which was first discovered in the autoimmune condition rheumatoid arthritis.
Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In some cases, the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. Disorders caused by this process are called autoimmune diseases.
The presence of rheumatoid factor in elevated concentrations is often used as an indicator of rheumatoid arthritis, though it can be elevated for other reasons.
Why take the test?
This test measures the amount of rheumatoid factor in the blood. It is typically used in conjunction with a physical examination and other tests to diagnose the autoimmune condition rheumatoid arthritis.
