What is a MuSK test?
The muscle-specific tyrosine kinase (MuSK) blood test screens for anti-MuSK antibodies. MuSK is a membrane enzyme which is important for the development of acetylcholine receptors on muscles. The presence of anti-MuSK antibodies is an indicator of Myasthenia gravis.
Myasthenia gravis is a rare neuromuscular condition which causes muscle weakness. The disease is caused by the immune system erroneously producing antibodies which lead to the destruction of receptors of neurotransmitter acetylcholine on the muscles.
Acetylcholine is a signalling molecule that transfers nerve impulses to muscles, destruction of the receptors on muscles means that they do not respond to the acetylcholine signal and do not function properly. Symptoms of myasthenia gravis typically present in muscles controlling the eyes, face and swallowing. These often manifest as droopy eyelids, double vision, difficulty making facial expressions, difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing.
