About Autoantibody profile 1

What is an autoantibody profile?

Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In rare cases the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. Disorders caused by this process are called autoimmune diseases and can be potentially life-threatening. Autoimmune diseases can be distinguished based on the type of autoantibody produced by the body.

Why take this test?

This is a comprehensive test which screens for several autoantibodies associated with autoimmune conditions: thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) associated with Hashimoto's disease and Graves’ disease; antinuclear antibodies associated with lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis; anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMAs) associated with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC); anti-smooth muscle antibodies associated with primary biliary cholangitis and autoimmune hepatitis (AIH); gastric parietal cell antibodies associated with autoimmune gastritis and pernicious anaemia; anti-liver-kidney microsomal (LKM) antibodies associated with autoimmune hepatitis.
