About Immunoglobulins igg igm iga

What are immunoglobulins IgG, IgM and IgA?

Immunoglobulins IgG, IgM and IgA types of antibodies typically produced by the immune system to protect against pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and parasites. IgG antibodies are the most common antibody found in the blood and offer long-term protection against pathogens after initial exposure. High IgG levels are associated with chronic infections and plasma cell disorders, whereas low IgG levels are associated with hypogammaglobulinaemia.

IgM antibodies are the first to be produced in response to an infection and offer short-term protection. High levels of IgM are associated with inflammation. IgA antibodies are important for protecting against infection in the mucous membranes of the lungs and intestines, as well as in saliva and tears.

Why take the test?

This test measures the levels of IgG, IgM and IgA antibodies in the blood and is useful to assess raised or decreased antibody levels which may be associated with infections or autoimmune conditions.
