About Extractable nuclear antibodies
What are extractable nuclear antigens?
Extractable nuclear antigens (ENAs) are proteins in the cell nucleus which can be easily extracted using saline. Autoantibodies are produced by the immune system against ENAs. Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In rare cases the immune system can malfunction, producing autoantibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. Disorders caused by this process are called autoimmune diseases and can be potentially life-threatening. Diseases associated with the presence of ENA antibodies include lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis.

This test checks for the presence of 7 specific antibodies against ENAs. It is typically used after a positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) test to diagnose an autoimmune condition and distinguish between conditions such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
