About Dna antibodies (single stranded)

What are anti-ssDNA antibodies?

The anti-ssDNA antibody test checks for autoantibodies which target single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). The genetic code present in every somatic cell of the body is stored in the form of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) but these strands are separated during DNA translation, temporarily forming single-stranded DNA (ssDNA).

Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In some cases, the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. Disorders caused by this process are called autoimmune diseases. The presence of anti-ssDNA antibodies is associated with the autoimmune condition systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Why take the test?

This test screens for antibodies which target dsDNA. It is typically used to aid the diagnosis of SLE.
