About Anticardiolipin igg and igm antibodies

What are anti-cardiolipin IgG and IgM antibodies?

Anti-cardiolipin antibodies, IgG and IgM, are two similar types of antibodies that both target cardiolipins. Cardiolipins, phospholipids, are typically found in cell membranes and are important for clotting.

Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In rare cases the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. Disorders caused by this process are called autoimmune diseases.

The production of anti-cardiolipin antibodies increases the risk of clotting and may also be produced in autoimmune conditions such as lupus and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). The level of anti-cardiolipins may also increase in people with an infection, cancer or repeated miscarriages.

Why take this test?

This test measures the level of anti-cardiolipin antibodies and can be used to help investigate abnormal clotting, autoimmune conditions such as lupus and ALS and recurrent miscarriages.
