About Erythropoietin

What is erythropoietin?

Erythropoietin (EPO) (also known as haematopoietin) is a hormone produced and released by the kidneys. It encourages red blood cell (RBC) production from the bone marrow and is released at low oxygen levels (hypoxia). Elevated or reduced levels of EPO in the blood may indicate certain medical conditions. Elevated EPO levels are associated with a kidney tumour or increased RBC production (polycythemia), whilst reduced levels are associated with anaemia. EPO is also abused as a performance-enhancing drug which can cause higher EPO levels.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of EPO in the blood and can be used to distinguish the type of polycythemia or anaemia.
