About Ceruloplasmin

What is ceruloplasmin?

Ceruloplasmin (also known as ferroxidase) is an enzyme responsible for carrying the majority of copper around the body. Copper is important for iron regulation, energy production and the formation of connective tissues. The level of ceruloplasmin in the blood can indicate a copper deficiency or Wilson’s disease, a genetic condition which results in a copper build up in the body.

Conditions associated with abnormal ceruloplasmin levels include copper deficiency, Wilson’s disease and Menkes disease.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of ceruloplasmin in the blood. It is typically used to diagnose Wilson’s disease.
