About Chlamydia species specific antibody screen (igg and igm)

What is a chlamydia species-specific antibody screen?

Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the UK. It is caused by a bacterial infection which can affect both men and women. Symptoms include discharge and pain during urination and women may also experience abdominal pains and bleeding between periods. Chlamydia must be diagnosed and treated to prevent the development of long-term health problems, such as pelvic inflammatory disease in women or infertility in men.

Chlamydia bacteria can be grouped into three different species: Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis), Chlamydia pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae) and Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci), each with different characteristics. C. trachomatis is the species associated with STIs but can also affect newborns if the mother is infected. The infection in newborns can cause pneumonia and conjunctivitis. C. pneumoniae is a common cause of community-acquired pneumonia and reactive arthritis. C. psittaci can by caught from birds and may cause flu-like symptoms or more severe symptoms, such as life-threatening pneumonia and liver and kidney complications.

Antibodies are proteins produced by the body’s immune system in response to infection. Antibodies are very specific to the type of infection and different antibodies will be produced in response to the different species of chlamydia bacteria.
