What is uric acid?
Uric acid is a product formed from the breakdown of purines. Purines are a natural substance formed in the body and are important for DNA and RNA.
Purines are also present in food and are particularly high in liver, anchovies, mackerel, dried beans and peas, and alcohol. Uric acid is removed from the blood by the kidneys and excreted in the urine.
High levels of uric acid are associated with gout. Crystals from uric acid may form in joints causing inflammation and pain. Too much uric acid may also lead to kidney stones and kidney disease.

This test measures the levels of uric acid in the blood. High levels of uric acid may be an indicator of gout or risk of kidney stones.
