About Lipoprotein (a)

What is lipoprotein?

Lipoproteins transport fat and cholesterol around the body through lymph, blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Lipoproteins are composed of phospholipids, triglycerides and apolipoproteins (a group of proteins which bind lipids (fat and cholesterol)). Different types of lipoprotein are formed depending on the apolipoproteins they are primarily made from which subsequently affects how they are transported and processed by the body.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) or ‘good cholesterol’ for example is primarily made from apolipoprotein A1 (apo A1) and is responsible for removing cholesterol from the blood, taking it to the liver for processing. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or ‘bad cholesterol’ is primarily made up of apolipoprotein B (apo B) and transports cholesterol to different tissues around the body.

Lipoprotein (a) is similar to LDL and is made from apolipoprotein B and apolipoprotein (a).While a balance of lipoproteins is important for maintaining a healthy metabolism, excess lipoprotein (a) is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease, heart attacks, strokes and heart failure.

Why take the test?

This test measures the lipoprotein (a) content of the blood and is an indicator of cardiovascular health.
