About Fibrinogen
What is fibrinogen?
Fibrinogen is a protein produced by the liver, it circulates in the blood and forms blood clots in damaged blood vessels to prevent excessive bleeding. The level of fibrinogen in the blood is elevated in response to chronic inflammation. Abnormal fibrinogen levels are associated with blood clotting problems such as disseminated intravascular coagulation.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of fibrinogen in the blood. It is used to diagnose fibrinogen deficiency, as a marker of systemic inflammation or to help diagnose unexplained prolonged bleeding.
