About Torch screen

What is a TORCH screen?

The TORCH screen is used to check for several infections which may be harmful if passed from a pregnant mother to her child (termed congenital infections). These infections include rubella, toxoplasma and cytomegalovirus. Complications in the new-born child include cataracts, deafness, intellectual disability (ID) and heart problems. Congenital infections may also cause spontaneous abortion or premature birth. Antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system to help fight infection against pathogens. IgM antibodies are a particular type of antibody and are the first to be produced in response to an infection offering short-term protection. IgG antibodies offer long-term protection against pathogens after initial exposure and the presence of IgG antibodies indicates immunity. This may be a result of a previous infection.

Why take the test?

The TORCH screen is used to screen for IgM and IgG antibodies for rubella, toxoplasma and cytomegalovirus. These infections can be passed from a pregnant mother to her child and may cause complications.
