About Group b streptoccocus test
What is Group B Streptococcus?
Group B streptococcus is a type of streptococcal bacteria often found in the intestines and lower genital tract. Many people will carry the virus and not show any symptoms. However, it may affect pregnant women, young babies and people with weakened immune systems. The risk to the baby is primarily after vaginal delivery if it picks up the bacterium. Whilst complications are uncommon, there is a risk of life-threatening complications such as pneumonia, meningitis or sepsis. Confirmation of a group B streptococcus infection will allow the mother to be treated with antibiotics prior to birth.
