What is insulin-like growth factor 1?
Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a protein produced by the liver in response to growth hormone. It is responsible for mediating many of the effects of growth hormone in regulating cell proliferation and growth. In childhood, high levels of IGF-1 are necessary to sustain growth and development. In adults, the level of IGF-1 is typically significantly reduced comparatively. IGF-1 deficiency in childhood is associated with growth problems such as dwarfism. Elevated levels in adults are associated with certain types of cancer and ageing.
