About Lipase
What is lipase?
Lipase is an enzyme produced by the pancreas, stomach and mouth to break down fats in the food you eat. The pancreas is part of the digestive system and is the greatest producer of lipase. Lipase should only be present in low levels in the blood and too much or too little lipase can indicate problems with the pancreas. Elevated levels of lipase may be indicative of acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), cancer or kidney disease, whereas low levels of lipase may indicate chronic pancreatitis.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of lipase in the blood and can be used to help diagnose acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer.
