About Islet cell antibodies
What are islet cell antibodies?
The islet cells are the cells of the pancreas that produce hormones such as insulin to control blood sugar levels. Insulin stimulates the absorption of carbohydrates such as glucose from the blood, producing energy and building material for cells. Diabetes is a condition characterised by high blood sugar, which would normally be regulated by insulin.
Type 1 diabetes is caused by the immune system mistakenly targeting and destroying the cells which produce insulin in the pancreas. Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In some cases, the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. These are called islet cell antibodies.
Symptoms of diabetes include excessive thirst/hunger, fatigue, blurred vision, sweet-smelling breath, tingling of the extremities, weight changes and nausea.
