About Gliadin igg antibodies
What are anti-gliadin IgG antibodies?
Anti-Gliadin antibodies (AGA) are antibodies produced by the immune system in response to gliadin, a component of gluten. Their production results in coeliac disease.
Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In some cases, the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target benign substances such as those found in gluten.
Normally, this process results in allergic reactions, however, these IgG antibodies produced in response to gluten also attack the body’s own cells, meaning that coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition.
Why take the test?
This test screens for and measures the amount of anti-gliadin IgG antibodies in the blood. It is typically used to diagnose coeliac disease.
