About Calprotectin

What is calprotectin?

Calprotectin is a protein released by the immune system at the site of inflammation. Elevated levels of calprotectin in the stool indicate bowel inflammation and can be used to diagnose inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Symptoms of bowel problems include bloody or watery diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of calprotectin in stool. It is typically used to distinguish between IBD and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) but can also be an indicator of colorectal cancer.
