About Amylase blood test
What is Amylase?
Amylase is an enzyme produced by the pancreas and salivary glands to break down the food you eat. The pancreas is part of the digestive system and is the greatest producer of amylase. Amylase should only be present in low levels in the blood and too much or too little amylase can indicate problems with the pancreas.
Elevated levels of amylase may be indicative of acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), cancer or infection, whereas low levels of amylase chronic pancreatitis, liver disease or cystic fibrosis.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of amylase in the blood and can be used to help diagnose pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, liver disease or cystic fibrosis.
