What is Zika virus?
Zika virus is a flavivirus transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. It does not naturally occur in the UK but can be passed from mother to unborn child. In adults, symptoms of Zika virus are generally mild and short-lived, including; itchy skin, temperature, headache, muscle and joint pain, conjunctivitis and eye pain. In pregnant mothers, Zika virus can cause birth defects including microcephaly in the unborn child. This is a severe developmental condition. Due to this risk, it is strongly advised that women wait 8 weeks after returning from a Zika virus-infected location to try for a baby and males wait six months.
Why take the test?
This test screens for both IgG and IgM antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Zika virus. It is used to diagnose a current or previous infection with Zika virus. This test is important if you are trying for a baby and either parent has recently been to a country where Zika virus is present. In rare cases, the test can produce false-negative results.
